From the 1880s, the former swamp west of Melbourne became heavily used as a dock, with an extensive network of wharves, heavy rail infrastructure, and light industry.
However, following the containerization of shipping traffic it fell into disuse and by the 1990s was virtually abandoned.

Since then the interiors of sheds became repurposed for urban functions, raves, workshops, and art functions.
The greatest waterfront opportunity for Melbourne appears to be a ghost town.

To revive Docklands North Wharf, we proposed the development of a new public space, that would encourage foot traffic to the area by giving local residents and visitors a more iconic harbor with activities to keep them engaged.

The new design includes a Boat school & workshop, which was deemed an important link to the history of Docklands.
As well as a Marine research center, retail plaza, café, and walking/cycling trails.

My contribution to the project is the design of the Boat school & workshop, with the help of a group member for the building façade design.

FORM FINDING PROCESS

The form-finding process used to generate ideas for the design of the buildings and pier was the manipulation of a soap membrane with wires, straws, and string to create a range of shapes.
