thE HIDEOUT LOUNGE, TULLAMARINE

Presented 2019 Graduation Exhibition Swinburne
The Hideout Lounge is located along the airport link train lines being built in Melbourne for the year 2050, designed underground as an extension of the train station platform.

With current airport lounge designs, business people and frequent flyers face an uncomfortable experience when traveling. The design of the Hideout Lounge takes a new approach, by moving away from the typical corporate style, and aims to create a space that provides a smooth and hassle-free experience.

The atmosphere of the Hideout Lounge was developed through the use of lighting on certain features of the lounge, such as illuminating the bar counter. This was done to create a different ambiance, as an approach to moving away from the clinical lighting, serious and corporate vibe of typical airport lounges.

With a desire for the lounge space to reflect its location, elements of the train station such as archways were developed throughout the interior. The choice to use earthy materials in the lounge is also intended to be reflective of the underground concept of the lounge.
The investigation into customer reviews has revealed that another big stressor on travels is crowds. To eliminate this and make the guests’ entrance into the lounge more seamless, 5 archways have been designed that span a large width of the entrance, this means that during busy periods, large masses will be able to pass into the lounge quickly and efficiently. The Hideout Lounge also allows guests to check-in their luggage before their arrival to the airport makes the experience hassle-free.
